Ian Mackintosh’s Catalina Grand Prix DVD Now Available!

For eight years begining in 1951, Catalina Island hosted a well fabled and scarcely documented Grand Prix.  The course took riders from asphalt to dirt through twisty roads and trails that still exist on the now well protected island just 21 miles off the coast of Los Angeles.  Winners included legends like Bud Ekins and Chuck “Feets” Minert on Triumphs and BSA’s.

Fortunately, a racing fan named Ian Mackintosh documented the race over the years in living color and his footage is now available on DVD.  See over an hour of rare scenes of racing on Catalina Island plus footage of Bear Chase, DeAnza Park, The San Jose Mile and VERY rare Torry Pines all narrated by Ian.

Okay, just got back from Catalina 30 minutes ago, but according to the local paper, the Grand Prix is back this December, for the first time in 50+ years. I know nothing else about it yet, but the District 37 AMA guys have been given a 1 time permit for this year December 2010.

To americantruimph.tv…I want to thank you for your wonderful review of my story about the Catalina Grand Prix! It’s so surprising how it has all come about. My film maker friend Gregg, my wife and daughter all did the initial layout for the artwork, and the finished products have been done by local print shop “Copy Cats” on Salem OR. Thanks to a great gal and family friend Jamie, she sees everything is done on time!

This has been such a pleasure to be able to share my history literally from my attic to a current day productions of such a wonderful time in life. We thank you again for your personal interest in such great motorcycle days gone by!

If your ever in the area stop in to see us in Oregon! My Best, Ian

    Ian,
My step-father is Bob Sandgren, he won the last two Catalina Races. He will be there in Catalina for the revival. He is up there in Oregon also, I am not sure if he knows about your DVD but I will let him know.
