For eight years begining in 1951, Catalina Island hosted a well fabled and scarcely documented Grand Prix.  The course took riders from asphalt to dirt through twisty roads and trails that still exist on the now well protected island just 21 miles off the coast of Los Angeles.  Winners included legends like Bud Ekins and Chuck “Feets” Minert on Triumphs and BSA’s.

Fortunately, a racing fan named Ian Mackintosh documented the race over the years in living color and his footage is now available on DVD.  See over an hour of rare scenes of racing on Catalina Island plus footage of Bear Chase, DeAnza Park, The San Jose Mile and VERY rare Torry Pines all narrated by Ian.

This is by far the best footage of the Catalina Grand Prix of the 1950′s I’ve seen.  Ian Mackintosh has preserved a true piece of motorcycle racing history.
